HSN, the Harmonised System of Nomenclature, is the World Customs Organization's product classification used by more than 200 countries. India uses it for customs tariffs and for GST, with eight-digit codes on invoices. The first two digits give the chapter, four digits the heading, six digits the internationally common subheading, and the last two India's own tariff line.

The HSN code decides the GST rate charged and the input tax credit your finance team claims, so it must match between the purchase order, the supplier's tax invoice and the e-way bill.
