Temperature Monitoring System: IoT, Wireless & Cloud
A temperature monitoring system is a set of connected data loggers that measure temperature continuously, send each reading to a cloud dashboard over Wi-Fi, 4G or Ethernet, raise alerts when a limit is crossed and produce audit-ready reports. It replaces paper logs and manual rounds in cold rooms, warehouses, hospital fridges, blood banks, laboratories, server rooms and vehicles. Ideabytes IoT designs and manufactures these systems in India: IoT temperature and humidity loggers, multi-channel PT100 units, MODBUS and Dixell gateways, and a cloud platform with SMS and app alerts and 21 CFR Part 11 compliant reports. Loggers have been our core business since 2009.

What is a temperature monitoring system?
Every IoT temperature monitoring system has the same five parts. A logger with a built-in or external sensor takes a reading at a fixed interval, 15 minutes by default on Ideabytes loggers and configurable to suit the process. A network link (Wi-Fi, 4G with a built-in M2M SIM, or Ethernet) carries the reading to the cloud. The cloud dashboard stores the data, shows live values and trend graphs on the web and on iOS and Android apps, and compares each reading with the limits you set. Alerts go out by SMS, email and app push notification when a limit is crossed. Finally, reports turn the stored data into the PDF records an inspector or auditor expects to see.
Continuous temperature monitoring matters because excursions rarely happen while someone is watching. A door left ajar at 2 am, a compressor that trips on a Sunday or a power cut during a festival holiday is invisible to a twice-daily manual log. A real time temperature monitoring system catches the event within one polling interval and keeps a tamper-evident record of it. Ideabytes loggers also hold around 90 days of readings in internal memory and carry a rechargeable battery for up to 20 hours of backup, so data is not lost when the network or mains power drops.
Wireless temperature monitoring system: Wi-Fi, 4G or Ethernet?
Connectivity is the first design decision, because it decides installation effort and running cost. Wi-Fi loggers (the IBI-W series) suit sites with a reliable 2.4 GHz network and an IT team willing to whitelist the devices. 4G M2M loggers (the IBI-M series) carry their own SIM with 2G fallback, so they work in basements, cold rooms, rural health centres and trucks where there is no Wi-Fi, and they keep the monitoring system separate from the corporate network. Ethernet loggers (the IBI-E series) plug into a LAN port and suit server rooms and plants where wireless devices are not allowed. Offline and USB loggers record to internal memory and are downloaded manually. They are useful for temperature mapping studies, shipments and back-up validation, but they are not a remote temperature monitoring system because nobody is alerted during an excursion.
- Wi-Fi: lowest running cost where a stable network already exists
- 4G M2M: no dependency on site Wi-Fi; best for remote or scattered sites
- Ethernet: wired LAN for IT-controlled environments
- Gateways: connect existing MODBUS RS485 sensors or Dixell controllers to the same cloud
Applications: where temperature monitoring systems are used
The same platform serves very different rooms. We have written a dedicated guide for each common application: cold storage and cold room monitoring, warehouse temperature monitoring and mapping, server room and data centre monitoring, blood bank refrigerators and plasma freezers, hospital and pharmacy fridges and freezers, vaccine storage in ice-lined refrigerators (ILR), laboratory and research monitoring for ULT freezers and stability chambers, and in-transit cold chain monitoring with GPS loggers. Each guide covers which loggers to use, how many measuring points are typical, and what records the relevant regulator expects.
For whole industries we also have solution pages for pharmaceutical temperature monitoring, healthcare and vaccine programmes, food, beverage and agrifood (HACCP and FSSAI), cold chain logistics and transportation, and combined temperature and humidity monitoring. The links below this article take you to each one.
Real time alerts and escalation
An alert that reaches the wrong person, or reaches nobody at night, is not an alert. On the Ideabytes platform each logger or channel has its own high and low limits and its own list of recipients, so a cold room alarm goes to the cold room team and a server room alarm goes to IT. Alerts go out by SMS, email and app push notification, and the alarm log records when each alert was raised, who acknowledged it and what corrective action (CAPA) was entered.
We recommend a simple escalation ladder in your SOP: the shift operator first, the supervisor if the alert is not acknowledged within a set time, and the QA or facility manager after that. Treat a logger that has stopped reporting as an event too; the dashboard shows the last reading time of every device, so a silent logger is easy to spot during each shift check.
Cloud based temperature monitoring system reports and 21 CFR Part 11
Regulated users need more than a graph. The cloud platform produces scheduled and on-demand PDF reports, trend graphs, alarm logs and mean kinetic temperature (MKT) values. Reports are 21 CFR Part 11 compliant, supporting the FDA expectations for electronic records: individual user logins managed by an administrator, an audit trail of setting changes and acknowledgements, and stored readings that users cannot edit after the fact.
The same records support WHO GDP, Revised Schedule M, NABH, HACCP and FSSAI inspections in India. An inspector usually asks for the temperature record for a date range, the excursion list with corrective actions, and the calibration certificate of each sensor. A good system produces all three in a few minutes.
Calibration and validation
A reading is only as good as the sensor behind it. Calibration certificates are available for Ideabytes loggers, and NABL-traceable calibration certificates are available on request. Most quality systems recalibrate once a year, or sooner for critical equipment. Multi-channel PT100 loggers make recalibration easier because the probes can be swapped while the logger stays in place.
In GMP environments the system itself must be validated through installation, operational and performance qualification (IQ, OQ and PQ), and a temperature mapping study normally decides where the permanent sensors go. Ask our team about the documentation available to support your validation protocol. Offline multi-channel loggers are also a practical tool for the mapping study itself.
Temperature monitoring system cost and buying in India
There is no single price because the system is sized to the site. The main cost drivers are the number of measuring points, the connectivity (4G includes a data plan, Wi-Fi does not), the temperature range and probe type (a -80 °C freezer needs a wide-range PT100 probe, a cold room does not), whether humidity is also measured, the software plan and report features you need, and calibration and validation services. Multi-channel loggers reduce the cost per point when many sensors sit close together, such as in a warehouse or a bank of freezers.
Ideabytes IoT is headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, with its development centre in Hyderabad and manufacturing in India. We are registered on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), a QCI-approved OEM and a DOT-approved M2M service provider, which matters for 4G loggers with embedded SIMs. Government hospitals, public sector units and research institutes can buy through GeM; private buyers receive a GST invoice with the HSN code of each item, which for most temperature data loggers is 90251990. Share your rooms, equipment and number of points with our team and we will propose a system, a site survey and a quotation.

Frequently asked questions
What is an IoT based temperature monitoring system?
It is a network of connected temperature loggers that send readings over Wi-Fi, 4G or Ethernet to a cloud platform. The platform stores the data, shows live values on web and mobile apps, sends SMS, email and app alerts when a limit is crossed, and produces audit-ready reports. It replaces manual logbooks and standalone thermometers with a continuous, tamper-evident record.
Which is better for temperature monitoring: Wi-Fi or 4G?
Wi-Fi loggers are cheaper to run where a stable 2.4 GHz network already covers the equipment. 4G M2M loggers carry their own SIM, so they work in cold rooms, basements, remote sites and vehicles and do not depend on the site network or IT approvals. Many customers use Wi-Fi in offices and laboratories and 4G in warehouses and cold rooms on the same dashboard.
What happens to data if the internet or power fails?
Ideabytes connected loggers store around 90 days of readings in internal memory at the default 15-minute interval and have a rechargeable battery for up to 20 hours of backup. When the connection returns, the stored readings are uploaded, so the record has no gaps. The dashboard shows the last reading time of every logger, so a device that has gone quiet is easy to spot.
How much does a temperature monitoring system cost?
The cost depends on the number of measuring points, the connectivity (Wi-Fi, 4G or Ethernet), the temperature range and probe type, whether humidity is included, the software plan and any calibration or validation services. Multi-channel loggers lower the cost per point on larger sites. Share your requirement and we will send a quotation sized to your rooms and equipment.
Are the reports compliant with 21 CFR Part 11?
Yes. The cloud platform provides 21 CFR Part 11 compliant PDF reports with individual user logins, an audit trail, alarm logs, corrective action (CAPA) entries and MKT values. Full compliance also depends on your own SOPs and system validation, so ask our team about the documentation available to support your IQ, OQ and PQ.
Can we buy Ideabytes temperature monitoring systems on GeM?
Yes. Ideabytes IoT is registered on the Government e-Marketplace, so government hospitals, PSUs and institutes can procure through GeM. Private buyers receive a GST invoice showing the HSN code for each item; most temperature data loggers fall under HSN 90251990. Calibration certificates are available on request.
