IoT Energy Monitoring System with MODBUS Gateway
An IoT based energy monitoring system reads electrical values such as kWh, kW, voltage, current and power factor from meters on each feeder, machine or inverter, sends them to a cloud dashboard, and alerts the team when consumption or demand crosses a limit. It is used by plant managers, facility teams and solar EPCs who need per-line visibility without manual meter reading. Ideabytes IoT does not sell energy meters. We connect the MODBUS RTU meters, inverters and PLCs you already have to Wi-Fi or 4G RS485 MODBUS gateways, and provide the dashboard, alerts and reports.
- GeM registered
- 21 CFR Part 11 reports
- Made in India
What goes wrong without monitoring
- A single utility bill for the whole plant gives no visibility of consumption per machine, line or shift
- Peak demand penalties arrive with the bill, weeks after the load spike that caused them
- Nobody knows exactly how many hours the DG set ran against grid supply, or what it cost
- Rooftop or ground-mount solar generation cannot be compared with site consumption in one place
- Meters are read manually once a day or once a month, with transcription errors and gaps
- Energy data sits in separate meter displays, inverter portals and spreadsheets that do not agree
How the system works
- 1Identify the MODBUS RTU energy meters, inverters or PLCs on site and share their make and model so we can confirm the register map
- 2Wire the devices on an RS485 bus, daisy-chained with unique MODBUS addresses, to one gateway per panel or area
- 3Configure the IBI-CSC50R (Wi-Fi) or IBI-CSC50RM (4G) gateway with the parameters to read; 8 parameters are set by default and configuration charges apply beyond that
- 4View live and historical values on the cloud dashboard and mobile apps, or on a local screen through the IBI-AGW edge gateway
- 5Set limits for demand, voltage or run status, and schedule daily, weekly or monthly reports for the energy team
Standards and regulators
- ISO 50001 (guidance)
- BEE PAT

What is an energy monitoring system?
An energy monitoring system measures how much electricity a site, building or machine uses and when. At minimum it records energy (kWh) and power (kW) over time; industrial systems add voltage, current, power factor and frequency per phase, so that engineers can spot overloaded feeders, poor power factor and idle machines drawing power.
This page covers industrial and commercial energy monitoring for factories, cold stores, warehouses, commercial buildings and solar plants. It does not cover consumer home energy monitors.
IoT energy monitoring system using your existing MODBUS meters
Most panel-mounted three-phase energy meters and many solar inverters expose their readings as MODBUS RTU registers on an RS485 port. The Ideabytes IBI-CSC50R (Wi-Fi) and IBI-CSC50RM (4G with a built-in M2M SIM) gateways communicate with up to 15 RS-485 MODBUS RTU devices and can monitor up to 30 parameters across them, sending the data to the Ideabytes cloud at a 15-minute polling interval by default.
Because the meters stay in place, there is no rewiring of power circuits. Share the meter or inverter model with us and we will confirm the register map before you order.
Real time energy monitoring system: what you can log
The parameters available depend on the meter, not the gateway. Typical three-phase MODBUS energy meters expose values such as:
- Cumulative active energy (kWh) and, on many meters, reactive and apparent energy
- Active power (kW) and maximum demand
- Voltage and current per phase
- Power factor and frequency
- Run status or hours from PLCs and DG controllers that expose them over MODBUS
Energy monitoring system using IoT vs manual meter reading
Manual reading gives one number per meter per day at best, written by hand. A connected system polls every meter automatically, 15 minutes by default, and keeps the full history, so a demand spike at 3 a.m. or a machine left running over a weekend shows up on the trend graph rather than as an unexplained figure on the next bill. Because the gateways store data in the cloud, several plants can be viewed from one login, and the same reports go to maintenance, finance and management.
Energy monitoring system dashboard, alerts and reports
Once connected, each meter appears on the web and mobile dashboard with live values and trend graphs. You set high and low limits on any parameter, for example a demand ceiling or a voltage band, and alerts go out by app push notification and optional SMS. Scheduled and on-demand PDF reports give daily, weekly or monthly records for the energy team, with an audit trail and alarm log.
Where a control room or production floor needs its own display, the IBI-AGW edge gateway has RS-485, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and optional 4G, and drives a local dashboard over HDMI. Configuration charges for the AGW are additional.
Industrial energy monitoring system for plants and facilities
In a factory the useful view is energy per line, per machine or per shift. Put a MODBUS meter on each major feeder or machine, connect up to 15 of them to one gateway, and consumption can be compared across shifts or against production. Many plants also want process temperatures alongside energy: the IBI-MTR8 logs eight PT100 probes on furnaces, ovens, chillers or cold rooms, and the WC-X and MC-X customised loggers take separately procured sensors for other room parameters.
Typical uses include compressors, chillers, HVAC, cold rooms, DG sets and main incomers. Tracking DG and grid run hours separately helps quantify fuel spend during outages.
Solar plant monitoring system with MODBUS inverters
Solar EPCs and plant owners often have inverter data in one portal and site consumption in another. If the inverters expose MODBUS RTU over RS485, the same gateway can read generation values such as kWh and kW from them and from the site meter, so generation and consumption sit on one dashboard. The 4G IBI-CSC50RM suits remote rooftop and ground-mount sites without reliable Wi-Fi.
Inverter register maps vary by make and firmware, so we confirm compatibility for each model before quoting. This is a data connection for monitoring and reporting, not a replacement for the inverter maker's own control software.
ISO 50001, BEE PAT and energy data
ISO 50001 energy management systems and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme both depend on reliable, metered energy data. A MODBUS energy monitoring system supplies that data and the history behind it. Ideabytes does not certify ISO 50001 or BEE PAT compliance; your energy manager or auditor uses the data within those frameworks.

Frequently asked questions
Do you supply energy meters?
No. Ideabytes does not sell energy meters. We connect the MODBUS RTU energy meters, inverters or PLCs you already have, or ones you buy from your preferred electrical supplier, to our Wi-Fi or 4G RS485 MODBUS gateways and provide the cloud dashboard, alerts and reports.
Can the gateway read my solar inverter?
If the inverter has an RS485 port with MODBUS RTU, usually yes. Register maps differ between makes, models and firmware, so share the inverter model and its MODBUS documentation and we will confirm which parameters can be read before you order.
How many energy meters can one gateway read?
The IBI-CSC50R and IBI-CSC50RM gateways communicate with up to 15 RS-485 MODBUS RTU devices and monitor up to 30 parameters in total across them. Eight parameters are configured by default; configuration beyond that is charged additionally. Larger sites use one gateway per panel or area.
Wi-Fi or 4G gateway for energy monitoring?
Use the Wi-Fi IBI-CSC50R where the electrical panel has stable Wi-Fi coverage. Use the IBI-CSC50RM, which has a built-in M2M SIM, for plant rooms, substations and solar sites where Wi-Fi is weak or absent. Both send data to the same dashboard.
How much does an IoT energy monitoring system cost?
It depends on the number of meters and inverters, how many parameters you need from each, Wi-Fi or 4G connectivity, whether a local HDMI dashboard is needed, configuration work and the software plan. Send us your meter list and models for a quotation.
Can government and PSU buyers in India procure through GeM?
Yes. Ideabytes IoT is registered on GeM, manufactures in India and is a DOT-approved M2M service provider. Share your meter list, meter models and the number of sites, and we will help map the requirement to the right Wi-Fi or 4G gateway for your tender.
