Temperature monitoring

Refrigerated Truck & Reefer Container Temperature Monitoring

A refrigerated truck is a lorry or van with an insulated body and a diesel- or engine-driven refrigeration unit that holds chilled or frozen cargo at a set temperature on the road. A reefer container is the shipping-container equivalent: a 20 ft or 40 ft insulated box with its own electric refrigeration unit, powered from a ship, a port plug or a generator set. Both hold a set point, but the cargo temperature does not always follow it. Ideabytes IoT supplies 4G GPS loggers for owned trucks and reefers and USB and Bluetooth loggers that travel with the load, for fleet operators, 3PLs and shippers.

What goes wrong without monitoring

  • The reefer display shows the set point or the supply air, while the cargo at the rear doors is several degrees warmer.
  • Loads packed warm into a truck that was not pre-cooled take hours to come down, and the unit cannot catch up on a short trip.
  • Multi-drop city routes open the doors a dozen times, and each opening lets in 40 °C air that the unit has to remove again.
  • Reefer containers sit unplugged at ports, container freight stations and on trailers between plug-in points.
  • Two-compartment trucks carry frozen and chilled goods together, and a single display cannot show both.
  • Leasing companies and shippers cannot tell from paper logs whether a unit is underperforming before it fails.

How the system works

  1. 1Match each vehicle or container to a logger: a 4G GPS logger for owned or leased units, a USB or Bluetooth logger for loads on third-party equipment.
  2. 2Place the probe in the return air or in a representative carton near the doors, not in the supply air stream.
  3. 3For two-compartment trucks, use a dual-channel logger with one probe per compartment and separate limits.
  4. 4Set limits by commodity, with alarm delays that allow for defrost and door openings, and send alerts with location to the dispatcher.
  5. 5Review trip reports to spot units that recover slowly after door openings, and service them before they fail.

Refrigerated truck: types used in India

Refrigerated trucks in India range from small insulated vans used for quick-commerce and pharmacy deliveries, through 14 ft to 24 ft reefer trucks on city and regional routes, to large trailers on long national highway corridors. Most use a refrigeration unit driven from the vehicle engine or a separate diesel engine, mounted on the front of the body. Some carry a partition that splits the body into a frozen and a chilled compartment.

The body insulation, the unit capacity and the door design decide how well a truck holds temperature. A monitoring system does not change those, but it shows clearly when a truck is being asked to do more than it can.

Reefer container: what it is and how it is powered

A reefer container is a standard ISO shipping container with an insulated shell and an integral electric refrigeration unit at one end. It needs external power: from the ship at sea, from reefer plug points at ports and container freight stations, or from a clip-on or underslung generator set when it travels by road or rail. Between those power sources, the container is unpowered and relies only on its insulation.

Reefer containers are used for frozen meat and seafood, fruit and vegetable exports, chilled dairy and pharmaceuticals. Many people searching for reefer containers want to buy, lease or understand them; for monitoring, the key point is that the container unit controls air temperature, not cargo temperature.

Containers carrying fresh fruit and vegetables also need the right relative humidity, and use fresh-air vents to remove the gases that ripening produce gives off. Where humidity matters, a temperature and humidity logger such as the IBI-MTH120-CN or IBI-UTH70 records both.

Reefer container temperature range and chart by cargo

A modern reefer unit can typically hold set points from well below -18 °C up to about +25 °C or higher; check the manufacturer data for your unit. The set point itself comes from the cargo. As a general guide:

  • Frozen food, meat, fish and ice cream: -18 °C or colder.
  • Chilled dairy, meat and ready-to-eat food: about 0 °C to 4 °C.
  • Refrigerated medicines and vaccines: 2 °C to 8 °C.
  • Controlled room temperature pharmaceuticals: 15 °C to 25 °C.
  • Fruit and vegetables: a commodity-specific set point, often above 8 °C for bananas, mangoes and other chill-sensitive produce.

Reefer truck temperature data: what to look for

A continuous record from each truck or container says a lot about the equipment, not just the load. Watch how quickly the temperature recovers after each door opening: a unit that takes much longer than the rest of the fleet usually needs a service. Regular saw-tooth peaks show defrost cycles, and a flat line close to ambient shows a unit that was switched off. A slow pull-down at the start of every trip points to missed pre-cooling.

Comparing these patterns across the fleet lets operators and reefer leasing companies plan maintenance and decide which units suit pharma or frozen work, before a failure turns into a rejected load.

Why cargo temperature differs from the reefer set point

A reefer unit cycles: it cools until the return air reaches the set point, then idles or modulates, and it defrosts its evaporator at intervals. The supply air is colder than the set point, the return air is warmer, and cargo packed tightly or against the doors can sit outside both. A reading from the unit display therefore describes the air at one point, not the product.

Reefers are designed to hold temperature, not to pull hot product down. Pre-cooling the empty body before loading and loading only pre-cooled product are the two habits that make the biggest difference. Door openings on multi-drop routes add heat at every stop, and the rear of the load recovers last. An independent logger probe in the product zone shows all of this, where the unit display cannot.

Refrigerated truck temperature monitoring: which logger

For owned fleets and leased reefers, fit a live logger. The IBI-MT70 reads -30 °C to +70 °C through an external stainless steel probe and sends temperature and GPS location over 4G LTE Cat-M1. The IBI-MT120-CN and IBI-MTH120-CN add an OLED display and store 90 days of readings at 15-minute sampling, the second one also logging humidity. For a two-compartment truck, the IBI-MTD120 reads two probes, each -50 °C to +120 °C, over 4G. For dry-ice and ultra-low loads, the PT100-based IBI-MT350 reads -200 °C to +350 °C.

For loads on trucks or containers you do not control, send a data logger for the reefer container with the cargo: the IBI-UT70 or IBI-UTH70 USB loggers record for up to 90 days at 10-minute intervals and produce an encrypted PDF report when plugged in, and the IP65 IBI-BTH70 can be read by Bluetooth at the dock.

Indian conditions: heat, highways, ports and quick-commerce

Summer ambients of 45 °C on northern and western corridors, 20-hour national highway legs, border and port dwell, and dense city delivery routes put more load on a reefer than most units are rated for in temperate markets. Pharma exports and quick-commerce dark stores add tighter limits and more door openings.

The 4G loggers carry a built-in M2M SIM from Ideabytes IoT, a DOT-approved M2M service provider, and send alerts with the vehicle location, so a dispatcher can act on a rising trend. Frequently asked questions

What is the temperature range of a reefer container?

Most modern reefer container units can hold set points from well below -18 °C up to around +25 °C or more, but the exact range depends on the unit model, so check the manufacturer data. The right set point depends on the cargo: frozen goods at -18 °C or colder, chilled food at about 0 °C to 4 °C and most refrigerated medicines at 2 °C to 8 °C.

Why does my cargo read warmer than the reefer display?

The display usually shows supply or return air at the unit, not product temperature. Cargo loaded warm, cargo against the doors, blocked airflow, defrost cycles and door openings all make the product warmer than the set point. An independent logger probe in the product zone shows the real temperature.

Can one logger monitor both compartments of a refrigerated truck?

Yes. The IBI-MTD120 is a 4G dual-channel logger with two probes, each reading -50 °C to +120 °C, so you can set separate limits for a frozen and a chilled compartment and get an alert from either. If you also need GPS location, pair it with an IBI-MT70 or IBI-MT120-CN.

Does Ideabytes supply refrigerated trucks or reefer containers?

No. Ideabytes IoT makes temperature data loggers and the monitoring platform, not trucks, bodies or containers. The loggers fit any refrigerated truck, van or reefer container, whatever the make of the refrigeration unit.

Is there a reefer monitoring system made in India?

Yes. Ideabytes IoT manufactures its GPS, 4G, USB and Bluetooth loggers in India, runs the 4G loggers on a built-in M2M SIM as a DOT-approved M2M service provider, and is registered on GeM. Reports are 21 CFR Part 11 compliant, and NABL-traceable calibration certificates are available on request.

How much does refrigerated truck temperature monitoring cost?

It depends on the number of vehicles or containers, whether you need live 4G GPS tracking or single-trip USB and Bluetooth loggers, single or dual compartments, and the reporting and SMS plan. Share your fleet size and routes and we will send an itemised quote.
