Temperature monitoring

Laboratory & Research Temperature Monitoring (Multi-Zone, ULT Freezers, Stability Chambers)

A laboratory temperature monitoring system continuously records the temperature, and where needed the humidity, of every freezer, refrigerator, incubator, stability chamber and room in a lab, raises an alert when any zone leaves its limits, and keeps a tamper-evident record for audits. It is for QC and R&D lab managers in pharma and biotech, hospital and diagnostic labs, research institutes and NABL-accredited testing labs. Ideabytes IoT supplies 4- and 8-channel PT100 loggers that read from -200 °C to +550 °C, single-channel PT100 loggers, and temperature-humidity loggers over Wi-Fi, 4G, Ethernet or offline, with 21 CFR Part 11 compliant reports.

What goes wrong without monitoring

  • A -80 °C freezer that fails on Friday night can destroy years of samples before anyone opens it on Monday.
  • Standard probes stop reading well above -80 °C, so ULT freezers and cryogenic storage are often not monitored at all.
  • Stability chambers must hold temperature and humidity for months; a short excursion can invalidate a study if it is not recorded and assessed.
  • Labs with dozens of units end up with a different logger, software and report format for each vendor's equipment.
  • Manual sample storage temperature logs are incomplete and difficult to defend during an NABL or client audit.
  • Alarms on the equipment itself only sound in the room, which is empty overnight and on weekends.

How the system works

  1. 1List every storage and process zone with its set point: 2–8 °C fridges, -20 °C and -80 °C freezers, incubators, stability chambers, rooms.
  2. 2Group nearby zones onto one 4- or 8-channel PT100 logger, and use temperature-humidity loggers for chambers and rooms.
  3. 3Pick connectivity: Ethernet or Wi-Fi on the lab network, 4G where IT access is slow, offline for a standalone record.
  4. 4Set limits per channel and an out-of-hours escalation chain, so a freezer alarm reaches an on-call scientist by app or SMS.
  5. 5Review reports, record corrective actions against alarms, and keep calibration certificates with your environmental records.

Multi-zone lab temperature monitoring with one 4- or 8-channel unit

Most labs have clusters of equipment: a row of freezers in a corridor, fridges and incubators on one bench, a cold room next door. Instead of one logger per unit, a multi-channel logger runs a PT100 probe to each unit and reports all of them as separate channels with their own limits. The IBI-WTR4 and IBI-WTR8 (Wi-Fi) and IBI-MTR4 and IBI-MTR8 (4G) take four or eight PT100 or PT1000 inputs in 2, 3 or 4-wire configuration.

Fewer devices mean fewer power points, fewer network connections and one line per zone on the dashboard. Where a standalone record is enough, the IBI-OTR4 offers the same four PT100 channels without a network connection.

Ultra low freezer temperature monitoring: -80 °C and cryogenic storage

A -80 freezer is outside the range of the thermistor probes used on ordinary fridge loggers. PT100 platinum resistance sensors are the practical choice here. The multi-channel PT100 loggers read from -200 °C to +550 °C, and the single-channel IBI-WT350 and IBI-MT350 read -200 °C to +350 °C, which covers ULT freezers, liquid nitrogen vapour-phase storage and heated equipment such as ovens on the same platform.

Place the probe in the freezer cabinet through the access port, not taped to the door, and set the alarm a few degrees above the set point so a failing compressor is caught while there is still time to move samples.

Stability chamber monitoring system (ICH Q1A conditions)

Pharmaceutical stability studies follow ICH Q1A(R2), which sets storage conditions such as 25 °C / 60% RH for long-term testing, 30 °C / 65% RH or 30 °C / 75% RH for intermediate and hot-humid zones, and 40 °C / 75% RH for accelerated testing. The chamber's own controller holds these conditions, but an independent monitoring system gives you a second, continuous record of what the samples actually saw.

Temperature-humidity loggers such as the IBI-WTH120 and IBI-ETH120 read -40 °C to +120 °C and 0–100% RH at ±2% RH. Each chamber gets its own limits, alarms and trend graphs, and excursions are recorded with the time, duration and corrective action so your QA team can assess the impact on the study.

Incubators, water baths and sample storage temperature logs

CO2 incubators, BOD incubators and water baths run at set points where a degree or two matters to the result. A probe in each, logged every 15 minutes by default (configurable), turns the sample storage temperature log into an automatic record with min/max, mean kinetic temperature and trend graphs, instead of a clipboard on the door.

For biobanks and sample repositories, map each freezer or rack position to a channel name that matches your sample management system, such as the room, freezer number and shelf. When an auditor or a sponsor asks for the storage history of a particular sample set, you can pull the report for exactly those channels and dates rather than photocopying a year of paper logs.

Cleanroom temperature and humidity monitoring

Cleanrooms, media preparation areas and instrument rooms usually need room temperature and relative humidity held within limits in your SOPs. A wall-mounted temperature-humidity logger per room, on Wi-Fi, Ethernet or 4G, gives the facilities team the same alerts and reports as the freezers. Differential pressure and particle counts are outside the scope of these loggers.

Where the lab network is tightly controlled, the Ethernet IBI-ETH120 plugs into a wired LAN port and avoids Wi-Fi configuration, while 4G units need no lab network at all. Both report to the same dashboard as the freezer and chamber channels.

NABL lab environmental monitoring and ISO 17025 records

ISO/IEC 17025, the standard NABL uses to accredit testing and calibration labs, expects labs to monitor, control and record environmental conditions wherever they can affect results, and to use calibrated equipment. GLP studies carry similar expectations for storage of test items and samples. Assessors usually ask for the environmental record for a period, the alarm history and what was done about each excursion.

Ideabytes loggers provide an audit trail, alarm logs, CAPA notes and 21 CFR Part 11 compliant PDF reports, scheduled or on demand. NABL-traceable calibration certificates are available on request for each logger. Accreditation remains the lab's responsibility; the monitoring system provides the evidence.

Overnight and weekend alerts

Most lab losses happen when nobody is there. Each channel can raise live alerts and app push notifications, with SMS as an option, and loggers alert on loss of power or network. The 4- and 8-channel Wi-Fi and 4G units carry an 8000 mAh internal battery with up to 18 hours of backup after a power failure, and the single-channel units up to 20 hours, so the freezers stay monitored while the generator or UPS is sorted out.

Build the escalation chain around who can actually act at 3 am: the on-call scientist first, the lab manager if the alert is not acknowledged within a set time, and facilities or the freezer service contractor for power and compressor faults. A short alarm delay stops routine door openings from waking anyone up, while a genuine rise in a -80 °C freezer still reaches someone within minutes.

Cost depends mainly on the number of zones, whether they can share a multi-channel unit, probe type and cable length, connectivity and the reporting subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Can one logger monitor several freezers and fridges?

Yes. The IBI-WTR4, WTR8, MTR4 and MTR8 take four or eight PT100 or PT1000 probes, one per unit, each with its own limits and alerts. They suit rows of freezers, fridges and incubators within cable reach of one point. For units spread across a building, single-channel loggers are simpler to install.

Which logger works in a -80 °C ultra low freezer?

Use a PT100 logger. The 4- and 8-channel PT100 loggers read from -200 °C to +550 °C, and the single-channel IBI-WT350 and IBI-MT350 read from -200 °C to +350 °C. Both comfortably cover -80 °C ULT freezers and vapour-phase liquid nitrogen storage. Standard thermistor probes are not suited to these temperatures.

Can I monitor humidity in a stability chamber?

Yes. Temperature-humidity loggers such as the IBI-WTH120 (Wi-Fi) and IBI-ETH120 (Ethernet) read -40 °C to +120 °C and 0–100% RH at ±2% RH, which covers ICH Q1A conditions such as 25 °C / 60% RH and 40 °C / 75% RH. They give an independent record alongside the chamber controller.

Do the records support NABL and ISO 17025 audits?

The loggers provide continuous environmental records, an audit trail, alarm logs with corrective action notes and 21 CFR Part 11 compliant reports, which is the evidence ISO 17025 assessors usually ask for. NABL-traceable calibration certificates are available on request. Accreditation itself depends on your lab's full quality system.

Can government labs and universities buy through GeM?

Yes. Ideabytes IoT is registered on GeM, so government research institutes, medical colleges and universities can buy through the GeM portal. The loggers are made in India, and datasheets and calibration certificates can be supplied for your purchase file.

What does a laboratory temperature monitoring system cost?

It depends on the number of zones, how many can share a 4- or 8-channel unit, probe type and cable length, connectivity (Wi-Fi, 4G, Ethernet or offline) and the reporting subscription. Send us your equipment list and set points and we will propose the most economical layout with an itemised quote.
